I am also working on a whole lot of new interviews including Tony Todd and Chanel Ryan and will be putting more of my interviews on my website in the coming months. I also hope to do something fun with Raven de la Croix too. Tony will be my 100th Actor/model interview and I could not think of a nicer bloke to commemorate the occasion. He's the man, he's the Candyman!!!
I also took the plunge and became a dealer member of the IADA. The club seems to have taken on new energy and will soon be having a major relaunch, which in the long run can only help collectors worldwide. There are some of the most reliable and popular dealers involved in the dealer programme and if collectors get behind the membership it will make a nice companion club to the UACC. Hopefully it will provide a very strong exemplar catalogue and perhaps one day also add its own auction site so people can avoid the many pirates on eBay.
While there are some brilliant dealers on eBay who do a fantastic job, they are often overwhelmed by the hoards of unsavoury would-be dealers and forgers which eBay heavily profits from. With so much money available to eBay these unscrupulous sods will always be around to plague the poor collector. All we can really do is try and educate and assist unwary collectors against being duped. Most large collectors know the game and can avoid the pitfalls, but it is the person who buys a gift, is just getting started collecting or just buys the odd item who is most likely to be ripped off and we need to provide a secure place for these people so they get what they paid for and are protected by dealers who will stand by their product. All dealers will make mistakes, but the good dealers will provide a guarantee, which means the collector does not end up out of pocket.
I would think that eBay would very conservatively make at least $20-40 million plus per annum from their listing and selling fees on their website. And I mean fees accumulated just from the fakes and forgeries, secretarials and autopens. If only the good dealers were left then I think that 70% of all listed autographs would disappear overnight. And can someone explain to me why eBay allows preprints to be sold in the mainstream autograph area instead of its own category. There is no way these should be sold with the originals and just make a time-wasting distraction for collectors. It's just another one of the shonky decisions offered by eBay in the name of making a buck....
If I was a collector on eBay, I would hunt down the few reliable dealers they can find or the actors/models etc who sell their own stuff there and then avoid the rest. And this goes for most other generic auction websites too. Many others are even worse....
